Best Time of Day To Catch Mahi-Mahi
This feisty fish goes by many names- Mahi-Mahi, Dorado, or Dolphin Fish. There is no argument that this fish is one of the most fun fish to target and catch offshore. Along the East Coast of the United States, this fish can be found in schools. Mahi-Mahi can be found year round off the South Florida Coast, however during between April-November is prime Mahi-Mahi fishing! During the summer they migrate north and can be found all the way up in Nova Scotia!
Best Times To Fish For Mahi-Mahi
There are really no set time periods during the day that Mahi-Mahi are caught and the bite does not tend to be trigged by the tides like inshore species such as Snook, Redfish and Tarpon. We have had the best luck catching Mahi-Mahi between the hours of 7am and 11am then again between 3pm and 6pm. We believe that once the summers sun gets high in the sky, it heats the water's surface and the fish go deep to stay cool. Plus, we also believe that most fish begin to feed when the sun rises and they must get full at some point since their stomachs can only hold so much food at a time.
Full Moon Bite
One rule that we have always lived by when targeting Mahi-Mahi is that the day after a full moon, the bite usually suffers. Therefore, there is no rush to be offshore before the first light. Most Anglers will typically avoid targeting Mahi-Mahi for one or two days after a full moon due to this.
We hope that this information has helped you in making a decision as to when to be offshore to target Mahi-Mahi.
